Biology is the natural science that deals with the study life and living organisms. Biology studies organisms’ structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.
But why study biology? Why biology is important?
- Importance of Biology in human lives. Agriculture, a field of biology, studies crop production on the land. Biology is important as agriculture is also important. Human communities, however advanced or sophisticated, can not ignore the study of agriculture. Many, however, have forgotten this. People have forgotten than farming and fishery are important arts since the two provides food for the mouths to feed. If humans are not so keen on producing crops, where can we get our food? Surely we still have meat, but animals also eat crops.
- Importance of Biology in environment. Environmental biology studies the natural world either as a whole or intensively on a particular area as affected with human activity. We are living things who interact with other living beings. We also interact with non-living things, or we so call them abiotics. To be able to understand our place on the world we must begin first by understanding life. Whatever we do, we affect everything around us. One reason why the world has so many dilemmas today, why it has so many conflicts is because very few people understand biology. We cry about global warming, the melting of the polar caps, pollution, rape of the environment, etc. but these troubles would be inexistent if a lot of us understood biology. Plastic bags, improper waste management, smoke belching, Styrofoam use, overfishing are things we do now but they will cause horrible damages to later generations. With this particular study, we understand our relationship with nature, and follow the rules Mother Earth has laid down for us.
- Importance of biology in society. Biology supports human health. Some studies of biology like virology study viruses and how they can be terminated. Medicine studies the human body in health and in ailment, with allopathic medicine focusing on curing the body from disease.
